Students' Safety while Crossing Sixth Street
by Aljawhrah Alajaji
Busy town roads are full of cars, scooters, and other vehicles, all of which rarely stop for pedestrians.
At the University of Idaho, Sixth street is the busiest street on campus. It located in the center of the University between the Living Learning Community (LLC), and the collage of Natural Resources Building. Every day, hundreds of students cross it and many people drive through it; therefore, most accidents on the university of Idaho campus occur on Sixth Street.
Of six students who cross the street interviewed about why accidents occurred, all agree that most of the accidents happened because either students are late to classes, or they do not look left and right before crossing the street. Also, some do not notice that there are cars, last drivers drive quickly and run the stop signs.
According to Lieutenant Dave Lehmitz of the Moscow police department, on Sixth Street there is at least one serious accident monthly. He says drivers should drivers should be careful and drive slowly before driving on busy street like sixth. Also, they must pay attention for stop signs and cross lines.
For pedestrians, Lieutenant Lehmitz give recommendations before crossing the sixth street; first, avoid using cell phones while crossing. In addition, when using ear pieces, they should only use one of them to keep the other ear open in order to pay attention when crossing. Second, make eye contact with drivers to make sure they notice before crossing.
In conclusion, both pedestrians and drivers should be aware of the consequences of being reckless. They must be careful on and off campus when they cross the street or drive through crosswalks.
